This is an example of a plunge pool also known as waterfall ponds. A plunge pool is a basin formed by the erosion caused by the displacement of water from a water fall or rapid. The depth of plunge pools are generally equal to the height of the falling water (Britannica). However, due to deposition and sedimentary cycles (sediments constantly being deposited and carried away) the actual depth of a plunge pool varies (Geoscienceworld.org).
